What is Image Tagging? |
| There are many ways of attaching data to images. Photoshop is the main program that I use to tweak images, and within this great program is the capability of adding metadata to an image. This data is a tiny file included with the image file, it is not seen by anyone looking at the photo, but it is there for other programs to see. These programs can be databases or libraries, cataloging programs such as Apple Aperture, Adobe Lightbox, Filemaker Pro, and many others. Information included in could be the type of camera used, shutter speed, if a flash was used, time and date, copyright information, location of the shot, description of the image, keywords and much more.
Why is this information needed you ask? Good question! In this digital age, there are many ways to disply your images on-line. Unfortunately, sometimes these images are misappropriated by others. This data can then be used to identify the actual copyright owner or creator of the image. This information is also very handy in setting up stock databases, so that an image can be found easily. And photojournalists use this way of transmitting information about the shot to their editors across the country. Here are a couple of links that explain more about metadata and copyright: Metadata Readers
