Image Licensing - what is this?

The way I, and many other professional photographers do business, is that we do not SELL images, we license them. You pay for the license to use an image just as you pay for a license for any software you use. I retain the copyright and ownership of all my images.

You have the licence to use the images for your business, but you do not have the right to give these images to another person or company to use to promote their business. I try to be very pro-active in preventing illegal use, so I have gone after these other companies when I see them use my images. It could cause embarrassment to all involved if you are giving someone these images and then I ask them to stop using those images. If you do have someone requesting a copy of the images I have provided you, please direct them to me. I am very interested in having more people legally use these images, as long as full credit is given to all involved.

I have licensed several images to national magazines over the several year, thanks in particular to this outdoor kitchen by RLS outdoor kitchenRLS Atlanta. When I do this, I do notify you as to what the magazine is, when it is to be published, and your information is also given to the editor of the magazine.

There are also stock agencies out there that are looking for architectural images. Some are the micro-stock agencies, which charge anywhere from a dollar to maybe $20 for unlimited use of an image. You will NOT find your images there! But I am considering making some of my images available to the higher end stock agencies, the ones who charge for each use of an image, and the images can be licensed to only a restricted group of users. It can be restricted so that your competitors can not use the image, but magazines or books can. Credits can be attached to the images submitted to these agencies, so that the end user has your contact information, as well as mine, so we can all get the credit we deserve. The homeowner's information is NEVER given out, not their name, not their address, nothing that can identify them.
