My dad celebrated his 90th birthday on New Year's Day, 2007. His wish was for a family reunion somewhere warm - he lives in Wisconson, not a great place to visit in the winter. So we headed to Hawaii! The following slide shows are my fond memories of a great time.

Update: Dad died January 21, 2008. We all remember him as a very special man, loving, kind, ingenious and humble, with a great sense of humor and much faith. He will be missed!

We stopped for the evening in Las Vegas on the way out. Bright lights, glitzy city, but very tacky at the same time.tower rooftop On the first day, we got up at 2:30 to see the sunrise over Haleakala, the 10,000 foot high crater wall on the east side of Maui. It was a full moon, so it set as the sun was rising.moon melting into the Pacific Bernie had to golf at Kapalua, the site of the first big pro tournaments every January. It's more beautiful in person than on TV, every hole has a view of the ocean. With 4500-6500 whales offshore, we spent a lot of time watching the ocean for signs - blows or tails splashing.Bernie waving at the camera

Just found these still on the camera! More of Bernie's shots of Oahu. parrot Bernie's shots of beautiful Maui. Part one of Bernie's Oahu images.
a miscellaneous set of images of the flora of Hawaii We drove along the east coast of Oahu, which is a great way to see surfers, waves, and wonderful scenery. Scenes from the oppoosite coast of Oahu, where we saw some awesome waves!
While Bernie golfed at Turtle Bay, I wandered along the beach and into the woods, where they filmed part of Lost, the TV series. We got to see the 13th Annual Honolulu International Festival, which featured participants from China, Taiwan, New Zealong and Japon, among others. On Maui, we drove the (in)famous Road to Hana, with it's 600 hairpin turns, one lane bridges, and fantastic views for all except the driver.
